Comedy Drama “KIASU” Promotional Tour in Malaysia
Movie Hits Malaysia Screens Nationwide this June 5
Produced and directed by the famous movie producer Law Gwo Yunn, “Kiasu” is scheduled to hit the Malaysia big screens nationwide this June 5. Main casts of the movie Shiou chieh-kai, Soya Tsai, Bright Pu and Henry Thia, set on a promotional tour today to attend the premier and a press conference.
The movie that gathered talents from Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia was filmed in both Singapore and Malaysia. The storyline of the movie revolves the life of a dentist. It is a comedy that cleverly weaves inspirational elements into humor.
The movie title “Kiasu” originated from Taiwan dialect, which means “afraid of losing”. The word depicts a common problem in the Chinese community – the urge to compare and compete in everything. This is a situation that has been plaguing the Asians, where parents faced unnecessary pressure when planning for their kids’ future.
“Kiasu” aims to bring out the message that many young people’s aspiration and talents were unintentionally killed because of their parents’ selfish decision to save their own faces. Sometimes it takes a little courage and rebel, together with proper communications, to change your fate. A chance taken is always better than regret later.
SHIOU and Soya Tsai Chasing Dreams
Shiou’s character in the movie is an introvert, boring and uninspired guy De Ming. He has been nothing but an obedient son who followed the mum’s “plan” and became a dentist. He has been burying his passion for arts and theatre until one day he participated in a motivational workshop that changed his views dramatically. He started to chase for his own dream and fight for the life that he really wanted to live.
Soya Tsai acted as Delia, a common call centre agent for a technology company, doing a mundane job and leading an unfulfilling, boring life. Her childhood dream of becoming an actress was never supported by the family. Coming from a broken family and being hurt in her own relationship, Delia remains optimistic about her future. She believes in herself and never stop chasing for her own dreams.
This is the first time Shiou is working with Soya. He said his first impression of Soya was she is a little too quiet. However, after the cooperation, it totally changed his view about her. “She is an active girl with own opinion. Her happiness is infectious and it makes working with her a pleasant experience.”
Describing Shiou as the “iron man”, Soya said she was amazed by how energetic he remained despite his busy schedule. “He is a very professional actor that will immediately plunge into his character by the call of “Action” although a minute ago he was just telling me how tired he was!” Soya said Shiou was born for this industry as “even with little time to rest, he managed to remain cheerful and enthusiastic”.
When the movie was screened in Taiwan earlier, both of them embarked on a busy schedule to promote the film. Shiou fell sick in between the busy timetable but still insisted to attend every possible activity arranged by the company. During the sharing session, the students and Soya also took the opportunity to give him a pleasant surprise by celebrating his birthday there.
In the movie, Bright Pu acted as Shiou’s senior and colleague at work. He comes from a family of doctors. He is a humorous character who loves to joke about SHIOU. Because of him SHIOU signed up for the motivational workshop that changed his life. In the beginning, he was against De Ming’s decision to leave his profession for his “unrealistic dream”. But seeing De Ming’s persistence and perseverance, he often teamed up with De Ming’s uncle (played by Henry Thia) to cover up for him in front of his mother.
Sharing Experiences in Colleges
The casts attended a sharing session with the students at the New Era College this morning. They had also scheduled for a special session with Inti College students to discuss about movie filming. They will be giving the students an insight of the movie, including the interesting contents and the filming experiences. This is the first time the artistes participated in such sessions in Malaysia.
