Lending his creative muscle to this movie is scriptwriter with a midas touch, Ryon Lee, who is also the director. His previous efforts were big box office hits, generating significant ticket sales cementing his status as one of the top scriptwriters in the local scene. Recent hits include “Woohoo”, “Great Day ”and “Nasi Lemak 2.0” – all of which were top 10 best-selling movies in Malaysia. He was bestowed with “Best Original Scriptwriting” awards in “ADA Drama Awards ” while his movies garnered two “Best Drama” awards. His talent was regionally recognized as well when he won the “2009 Asia-Pacific Award that honors the creative arts and cultural industries”. An established scriptwriter, he is spreading his creative wings to the director’s chair with “The Transcend” marking his directorial debut.

A producer is often referred to as the heart of a movie. “The Transcend” is produced by James Wong, who is a wellknown local artists in Malaysia with many years of experience in filming under his belt. He wore many hats in the production of this movie. Besides playing a supporting role, he is also the founder and director of “Just Work Entertainment”. His popular commercial movies include “The Cycle of Love” and “The Legacy of a Lost Love”. In addition, he also produced numerous entertaining programmes such as 2013 Lunar New Year Special Programme, such as “The Arena of Stars, A Chinese New Year TV Show for RTM – 2013” and “Reunion, A Chinese New Year Show for TVi”. His company also produced the biography for one veteran actress who bagged many awards locally and overseas – Auntie Lai Ming. In “Auntie Lai Ming’s Biography”, her life story was beautifully captured and retold to her audience, proving to be one of the successful productions by “Just Work Entertainment”. In “The Transcend”, he plays a positive and articulate artiste manager.

The movie focuses on Yan Dong, a cocky young writer who spins supernatural tales yet does not believe in the existence of spirits and ghosts. Until he met Le Le who helps him to “open up” his “third eye” which the Chinese believe will help a person in seeing spiritual beings. Some spirits stay in limbo after death, unable to leave in peace and this is where Yan Dong helps them to solve their “earthly” problems so they can move on to the afterlife.

On the other hand, Le Le, portrayed by Mindee Ong, is able to see spiritual beings since young. This ability, she believes, led to her dad’s untimely death and her mum to be in a vegetative state in a hospital. She is cool towards others until she meets Yan Dong, who changes her outlook in life. She starts being more optimistic, and learn to appreciate Yan Dong more despite them setting off on a wrong foot.Speaking about “The Transcend”, Lee and Wong said the idea came about when they witnessed an elaborate funeral whereby the nun was chanting some prayers for the deceased. They felt that knowledge of such ritual should be passed on to the younger generation. This supernatural thriller is in fact conveying the message to appreciate each other and not to wait till it is too late to cherish moments with loved ones. They are not “lost” upon his or her passing if their memories are cherished and kept alive in your heart. The director and producer duo said that “The Transcend” is not intended to advocate superstition, but to pass on the cultural heritage such as common practices and filial piety especially to the younger generation.
